Taken from main site Speedway racing at Sandy Lane, Oxford will not return in 2009 following an eleventh hour rejection of a strong consortium bid to bring back the Cheetahs at Premier League level. Existing promoter Nick Andrews and Ian Kirke of sponsors Training For Success had been working tirelessly behind the scenes with two current and vastly experienced promoters to establish a sustainable business plan that would have guaranteed racing over the long-term. Confidence was high and funding was available to establish a highly competitive side that would, no doubt, have challenged for honours at the second tier. The consortium remains optimistic that speedway will return to the city in the near future at arguably one of the best venues in the country. Both Nick and Ian expressed their gratitude to the supporters who actively and enthusiastically supported the nomadic team during their short but eventful existence and look to bring the curtain down at Swindon on 12th October with another determined performance. Thanks also go to the riders who proudly wore the Cheetahs colours and helped in nearly realising the primary goal. Have the GRA given Tony Mole the green light to run Elite League as that is all they seem to want. Also don't rule out a complete move of the Lakeside set up to Oxford

Twenty minutes after this revelation was made public on Radio Oxford there was a denial on the one o'clock sports news quoting a lady from the GRA, whose name I didn't grasp, who said that negotiations had not ended but were continuing. The plot thickens!

maybe somebody in the know will throw some light on the situation, was the offer by nick and ian not good enough or as been said gra want the elite league only by which is in for a big shake up next season, so chuck in the names of stuart douglas and jon cook into the plot and see if it thickens any more

I don't think the gra have done their homework in wanting Elite League speedway at Oxford next or any ensuing season, if that is the case. Who, in their right mind, would want a return to the 'circus' of that league with 'our' riders riding for up to four other clubs in as many countries in Europe. That means guest riders if you can get one far too often and the prospect of the same teams every four or five weeks with the same riders more often that that. What a farce it all is at the moment, and you don't really need reminding of that, do you? Greg Hanthingy, one of 'our' more recent gp riders, is a good example of that. You always knew when the next gp was due when Greg was in the team with his pre gp scores often dipping to about half of what could be expected. I really don't know why so many people cheer at the BBQs when he is doing well earning his personal crust. If the rumours are true I think the gra should think again. I don't think Elite League crowds would be much better than the Conference crowds we had for the last few meetings at Cowley. The racing wouldn't be any better!

true i think the gra are making a big mistake wanting elite league speedway back so the question is who keeps them informed , so no speedway at oxford in 2009, rummors of 2010 of return to cowley, maybe its time somebody in the know to come forward and pass on any infomation

You are absolutely right on all counts. What's interesting me is that someone out there is seemingly prepared to take the considerable gamble of re-introducing the sport to Cowley when it's reported that the entire planet is on the verge of economic armageddon. If all the doom and gloom we read about daily is even half-way accurate, it's a risky old project, and I'd agree a complete non-starter if EL is the target.

Whilst EL would be better than nothing, it would be the worst League to ressurrect the Cheetahs in and wouldn't guarantee bigger crowds than PL speedway at Cowley, quite possibly in reality lower crowds!
The name Tony Mole keeps springing up, who has proved to be an astute mover in speedway circles. I think he'd offer the best chance of a successfull Oxford return and he certainly wouldn't revive the club in the EL!

Sadly all this talk of GRA wanting EL speedway is a red herring imo. They do not want speedway at Cowley full stop and knowing that EL speedway is more or less dead in this country, they know that anybody must be barking to think they could make it pay at Cowley. So with no promoter willing to take it (EL) on they (gra)get what they want, no speedway at Cowley. Just my thoughts of course. Colin
