Hi All
I was walking along Poole quay last Friday lunchtime and I spotted a man being pushed along in a wheelchair chatting to another chap. As they got closer to me I recognized the person in the wheelchair was Pip Lamb. I had a long chat with him about the past and he was in good spirits and wished to be remembered to all at Oxford Speedway who might recall him. I always feel very sad re Pip's accident because it happened in the first year that Barry Strange and I were preparing the Oxford track. Made us think if it was worth it but we did it for another 11 years!! His accident happened thirty years ago next June. Incidentally the other man with Pip was Adam Shields who that morning had been to hospital for a check up after his bad crash at P'boro last month and had been told he needn't wear his body cast anymore. If you ever meet Adam you will find him one of the most polite and well spoken people you could wish to talk to. Just like Uncle David (Shields). Adam lives in Poole and Pip, who still lives in Hereford, is part of his support crew and had gone to stay with Adam for a couple of days. I'm sure everyone here will wish both Pip and Adam a safe and happy future.

Is it really 30 years? If I recall, he picked up some drive & fell badly just coming off of the 4th bend. An all Oxford line up in the rider of the night as well, truly tragic. I believe Pip was having his best season, he was really flying that year. Glad to hear he is still involved and enjoying speedway and is in good spirits. We had some good riders around that time and it was a joy to watch them so good in fact I did nearly every match home & away that year (1979). Led by one of the greatest team men of all time imo George Hunter. Colin

Colin I am sure we all have a memory of what happened to Pip that night and I have read and wondered about the reports of the incident as it happened imediately in front of me and I cannot understand how my version of the event Differs so much with the reports As I remember Pip had a mechanical failure after the third bend and put his hand up to signal that he was slowing and drifted out towards the fence on the fourth bend as he got closer to the exit of the fourth bendhe had drifted out towards the fence then he was suddenly thrown forward from his bike as if his footrest had tangled with the chainlink fence throwing PiP headfirst into the steel post that held the chainlink fencing in place Pip was at that time my Favourite Oxford rider as I had watched and noted his potential as a student of the sunday morning training schools that used to be held at Oxford and so the incident always stuck in my mind It is good to hear thah he is doing well and i hope he continues with a happy future

Pip Lamb was such a promising young rider, and another rider of that generation who comes to mind was John Hack, does anyone know what became of him?
I remember the Cheetahs years in the NL very well, in particular David Shields. I thought this was how Speedway should be really, with the right blend of experienced riders and up and coming younger ones, prime characters and some Aussie brawlers in the mix...
